Early Potatoes

Early potatoes in containers

Planting one or more potato tubers in a bag or a rigid container has become a widely advocated method of getting early fresh home-grown tasty new potatoes. Its easy to grow potatoes this way but for maximum yield you may have to think about some of the many factors which can affect growth under these conditions. So:

  1. how successful is this method?
  2. how do you get the best results?
  3. what are the real or potential problems?

One of the first decisions you have to make is – which variety do I grow? So, we decided to set up a small trial to measure the yield and number of tubers produced by eight varieties of first-early potatoes and two second-early potatoes. Just for a bit of fun we challenge you to rank the 10 varieties in order of yield.
